Would it really say this?
It's certainly what I was taught in Sunday school and beyond through university and ministry training. I knew all too well what everyone else said he was. But the niggling question I had that never went away was what did he himself think?
Did he know what everyone else would come to say about him?
Did he believe this too? I mean, in the same way?
I wasn’t convinced.
When I finally and realised how up its own arch Christianity could be, and how the Jesus they recruited to verify their account didn’t cohere with the Jesus I knew and loved, I unfollowed.
As for Jesus, well I had to end our relationship because I just couldn’t get on with his family.
He was the ex I never got over.
Secretly I still pine for him.
And this got me wondering… if he really were an ex and I was sneaking the occasional glance at his social media…. how would he describe himself?
(Bearing in mind he only gets 150 characters.)
I think it would go something like this:
Let’s get into the larger mind.
This is what it looks like.
This is how you do it.
Here, I’ll help you.
Follow me.
Maybe he had an inkling of the f-coup they would make of it.
How he would be misrepresented. Son of God exclusively with a capital S rather than one-and-the-same among us showing us that we are all Divine.
Maybe that’s why he was at pains back then to ask Peter, who do you say that I am?
Peter made his choice.
He became the rock upon which was built the Church of Rome and the theology of Christendom with the conversation of Emperor Constantine.
Maybe he still asks the same question today.
Whispers to us in those wistful moments -
‘Who do you say I am?’
